Abstract
The development of live bacterial vaccines is reviewed, in particular aroma tic-dependent Salmonella, either for protection against the corresponding i nfections (including typhoid fever) or as carrier-presenter of antigens of unrelated pathogens or of DNA specifying them. Aromatic-dependent Salmonell a live vaccines are also compared with BCG and Ty21a and the recent records of exceptional situations are discussed in which aroA (deletion) strains o f Salmonella typhimurium cause progressive disease in mice.
