Different mechanisms of formation of sulfuric acid in nebulous drops a
re considered. Equations for calculation of the rate of acidification
of a drop according to different mechanisms are derived, Relative sign
ificance of three main routes are compared: noncatalytic chain oxidati
on of sulfite by oxygen, stoichiometric oxidation of sulfite by hydrog
en peroxide; and oxidation of sulfite by oxygen catalyzed by Mn(II) an
d Fe(III) ions. A key role of the catalytic oxidation of sulfite in th
e formation of acidic rains is shown. Based on the analysis performed,
a method for decreasing the acidity of rains is suggested.
