Since the beginning of this year oxcarbazepine has been registered in Germa
ny for the treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generali
sation in adults or children six years and older. Though only on the market
in Germany for a short rime, there ore almost 10 years of experience with
oxcarbazepine in other European countries. Furthermore Oxcarbazepine has be
en used in clinical studies and in daily practice in Germany even prior to
its registration. This article summarizes the practical experience in the a
rea of epilepsy with oxcarbazepine and will give suggestions for the use in
day-today routine.
In addition, areas of use not yet registered e.g. in the treatment of mania
or pain therapy are mentioned.
