Intelligence may be studied in 2 distinct ways, using a psychometric or a b
iological approach. The psychometric approach is focused on the assessment
of a person's level of mental ability and documents individual differences
between people in mental abilities. Biological studies seek those brain fun
ctions that cause individual differences in human mental abilities. The lac
k of overlap between these approaches means that it is unclear what the sco
res of intelligence tests mean in terms of fundamental biological processes
of the brain.
