A convergent synthesis was used to build up dendrimeric structure cons
isting of L-aspartic acid units. The bifunctional monomer N-methacrylo
yl-N'-succinoyl urea (3) was synthesized by addition of the free amino
group of L-aspartic acid to methacryloyl isocyanate. Dendrimers of di
fferent generation were prepared by condensation of the branched pepti
des with the methacrylic monomer resulting in -N'-alpha,beta-bis-(L-di
methoxyaspartyl)-succinoyl urea and a,beta-bis-(L-aspartyl-alpha,beta-
bis-(L-dimethoxy aspartyl))-succinoyl) urea (6). The monomers were hom
opoymerized and copolymerized with phenyl methacrylate and phenyl meth
acrylamide by free radical mechanism.
