An original method for preparing alpha and beta polymorphs of trans-[Pd(NH3
)(2)Cl-2] From NH4Cl, KCI, or NH4NO3 solutions is described. The concentrat
ion ranges in which single-phase products are formed were established. From
NH4Cl and NH4NO3 solutions, perfect beta-trans-[Pd(NH3)(2)Cl-2] single cry
stals were prepared. Their densities were measured, and their orthorhombic
symmetry was proved. Crystal data: a = 8.1415(6) Angstrom, b = 8.1459(7) An
gstrom, c = 7.7888(5) Angstrom, V = 516.55(7) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, d(obs) =
2.68(5) g/cm(3), d(x) = 2.718 g/cm(3), space group Pbam (Pba2). The square-
planar coordination of palladium atoms is made bipyramidal by two chlorine
atoms separated at 3.43 and 3.45 Angstrom. The crystal structure is built o
f an alternation of ordered and disordered layers.
