WC-Co/Ni-base self-fluxing alloy layers were successfully formed on steel s
ubstrates using an electron beam cladding process. The WC particles were de
nsely and homogenously dispersed within the Ni-base self-fluxing alloy with
out porosities. The effect of the electron beam conditions on layer formati
on was investigated, and the cladding layer properties were examined by har
dness tests, abrasive wear tests and immersion corrosion tests. It was foun
d that the cladding layers showed higher hardness, abrasion resistance and
corrosion resistance compared with the mild steel substrate. (C) 2000 Elsev
