Multi-element analysis was carried out in natural emeralds, their associate
d rocks and one sample of beryl obtained from Rajasthan, India. The concent
rations of 21 elements were assayed by Instrumental Neutron Activation Anal
ysis using the k(0) method (k(0) INAA method) and high-resolution gamma ray
spectrometry. The data reveal the segregation of some elements from associ
ated (trapped and host) rocks to the mineral beryl forming the gemstones. A
reference rock standard of the US Geological Survey (USGS BCR-1) was also
analysed as a control of the method. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rig
