F. Rosner et al., Comparative investigations about the application of ultrasound measurement(PIGLOG) for prediction of the lean meat content in gilts, ARCH TIER, 43(5), 2000, pp. 499-506
Ultrasound based systems for in vivo estimation of lean meat content were c
omparatively investigated in 100 gilts (German Landrace, German Large White
, Leicoma and F-1). Rank correlations increased between ultrasound based es
timations of lean meat and carcass classification with growing age and live
weight, respectively. Lean meat content was estimated with the PIGLOG syst
em and the B-mode device with repeatabilites of R-2=0.40 and R-2=0.63, resp
ectively. We can not recommend the use of PIGLOG derived estimates of lean
meat content in selection of gilts without prior correction of the calculat
ion algorithm in the investigated populations. Our investigations furthermo
re demonstrated the importance of sufficient training of the persons conduc
ting the measurements.
