Phthalocyanines linked to C-60 have been synthesized by two general strateg
ies. One of them involves the addition of an azomethine ylide prepared in s
itu from a formyl phthalocyanine to C-60, and the other one involves a stat
istical condensation of two substituted phthalonitriles. one of them bearin
g the C-60 moiety covalently attached. These new phthalocyanine-fullerene d
yads have been studied by cyclic voltammetry and Osteryoung square wave vol
tammetry, and inter- and intramolecular electronic interactions between the
two electroactive subunits have been demonstrated.
