Abstract
Brady, Creighton and Theme (BCT) have proposed a choice of the lapse and sh ift for numerical evolutions in general relativity that extremizes a measur e of the rate of change of the 3-metric (BCT gauge). We investigate the exi stence and uniqueness of this gauge (with Dirichlet boundary conditions), a nd comment on its use in numerical time evolutions.
