The essential results of experimental studies on shear strain development a
nd localization in a high-strength steel, a titanium alloy, and a mild shee
t steel under impact loading are presented. The prevailing effect of heatin
g at intense plastic flow on the development of plastic shear and the forma
tion of adiabatic shear bands in metals at high strain rates is confirmed b
y the analysis of experimental data, the changes in the microstructure, and
the results of numerical simulations. The distribution of temperature, rai
sed as the result of localized plastic flow, determines the scale and natur
e of microstructure changes and phase transformations in metals.
