Two female Grevy's zebras (Equus grevyi), one juvenile and one adult,
were treated for hemolytic anemia. The juvenile survived, but the adul
t animal, which also had methemoglobinemia, was euthanized after it fa
iled to recover from anesthesia. Significant pathologic findings in th
e adult zebra included generalized icterus, hemoglobinuric nephrosis,
and paracentral hepatic necrosis. Serum titers for known infectious ca
uses of anemia were negative. Examination of the zebra holding areas r
evealed two hybrid red maple (Acer sp.) trees. There was no known expo
sure to other hemolytic agents. This is the first report of probable r
ed maple-induced hemolysis in zebra.
