Effect of a magnetic field on ordering of FePd was examined. Single crystal
s of disordered FePd were heat treated at various temperatures under the ma
gnetic field up to 10 T. When the temperature is higher than 793 K, a mono-
variant structure of the L1(0) ordered phase is formed under the magnetic f
ield of appropriate strength. The necessary conditions far the formation of
the mono-variant structure are: the ordering proceeds by nucleation and gr
owth process (the temperature of heat treatment must be higher than the spi
nodal ordering temperature), and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is su
fficiently large to change the nucleation rates of different variants.
