A dual-polarized L-band microstrip antenna was designed, constructed, and t
ested. A new design procedure based on optimizing the orthogonal mode isola
tion is demonstrated experimentally to provide highly decoupled feedlines a
nd radiated fields with low cross-polarization levels. Isolation between or
thogonal ports of less than -36 dB across the operating band is reported. A
n impedance match of better than -10 dB over a 1% bandwidth centered around
the resonant frequency was achieved. Cross-polarization levels were less t
han -40 dB on boresight, and typically less than -35 dB over the entire rad
iated field on the resonant frequency. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
