We analyse the relative intensity noise (RIN) induced in a transmitted chan
nel by the out-of-band dispersion from cascaded fibre Bragg gratings used f
or dropping the adjacent channels. For wavelength-division-multiplexed syst
ems having equal channel spacing, the RIN enhancement is due to the net out
-of-band dispersion slope of the cascaded gratings and is considerably more
significant than that due to propagation in fibre at the zero first-order
dispersion wavelength. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
