P. Labas et al., The results of compression sclerotherapy - Comparative study of two techniques and two sclerosants, PHLEBOLOGIE, 29(5), 2000, pp. 137-141
In the last 20 years were treated 3599 patients for chronic venous insuffic
iency. In the years 1976-1983 was used the Sigg's technique, from 1984 up t
o now was prefered the Fegan's procedure. All patients underwent the phlebo
logical protocol. As a good result was considered disappearance of varices
and eczemas, reduction of oedemas, healed ulcers and relief of symptoms (pa
in, fatigue, tiredness). Results in the group pf patients treated by Sigg's
(polidocanol, n = 895 patients) the overage core rate was 78,53% +/- 7,4%,
in Fegan's group (S.T.D., n = 1263 patients) this rate was 82,38% +/- 6,58
% after six months assessment in 6 observed signs. Statistically highly sig
nificant differences were found only by disappearance of varices (p <0.0005
) in favour of Fegan's technique. In Fegan's group (polidocanol + S.T.D., n
= 876 patients) cure rate was 85,11% +/- 7,59% when patients were checked
after three to five years, again the only statistically significant differe
nce was round by disappearance of varices (p <0.05) in favour of Fegan`s te
chnique using a combination of two detergent sclerosants. Conclusions: The
modern compression sclerotherapy could be on alternative treatment to the s
urgery The number of treated patients and surgical skill ore very important
factors for achieving good therapeutic results and avoiding complications.
