P. Hagler et al., Heavy-quark production as a sensitive test for an improved description of high-energy hadron collisions - art. no. 071502, PHYS REV D, 6207(7), 2000, pp. 1502
QCD dynamics at small quark and gluon momentum fractions or large total ene
rgy, which plays a major role for DESY HERA, the Fermilab Tevatron, BNL RHI
C and CERN LHC physics, is still poorly understood. For one of the simplest
processes, namely b (b) over bar production, next-to-leading-order perturb
ation theory fails. We show that the combination of two recently developed
theoretical concepts, the k(perpendicular to) factorization and the next-to
-leading-logarithmic-approximation Balitskii-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov vertex, g
ives perfect agreement with data. One can therefore hope that these concept
s provide a valuable foundation for the description of other high energy pr
ocesses.
