The formation of volatile organic compounds through secondary reactions dur
ing the post-polymerization of vinyl acetate containing latexes using organ
ic hydroperoxides with ascorbic acid as redox initiator was investigated. I
t was found that such initiator systems are highly effective in reducing fr
ee vinyl acetate but organic by-products are produced. A reaction scheme co
