Abstract
meta-Substituted "proton sponges" were prepared for the first time by the d irect nitration of 5,6-bis(dimethylamino)acenaphthene under strong acidic c onditions and by the selective reduction of 1,3,8-tri- and 1,3,6,8-tetranit ronaphthalenes and subsequent alkylation of the compounds obtained. 4,5-Bis (dimethylamino)-1,2,3,6,7,8-hexanitronaphthalene was synthesized starting f rom 1,3,6,8-tetranitronaphthalene.
