Abstract
A microsomal-bond cytochrome P-450 enzyme system has been discovered in the roots of Aphelandra squarrosa that is responsible for the stereospecific i ntramolecular phenol coupling of (S)-dihydroxy-verbacine to aphelandrine. T he biogenesis of the closely related alkaloids orantine (ephedradine A) and ephedradines B, C and D should follow a similar biogenetic pattern. (C) 20 00 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
