Electrical breakdown characteristics of composite insulators consistin
g of cryogenic gas and liquid in a nonuniform field have been investig
ated. The breakdown voltage increases slightly as the electrode distan
ce of gas layer, d', increases. After the breakdown voltage decreases
abruptly with increasing d', it again increases slightly with further
increase of d'. These results observed at both AC and DC voltages were
interpreted as the Sumoto effect and corona wind.
