Specific retention volumes, activity coefficients at infinite dilution, par
tial molar excess enthalpies and entropies, partial molar enthalpies of sol
ution for m-, p-xylenes and m-, p-ethyltoluenes in 4-[(4-chlorobenzyl)oxy]-
4-cyanoazobenzene (CBOCA) as solvent were determined using gas-liquid chrom
atography. The separation of m-, p-xylenes and m-, p-ethyltoluenes was stud
ied on a packed column with 2.5 % CBOCA on Chromosorb W HP 100-120 mesh, in
the nematic and smectic phases of this liquid crystal. Comparisons and com
ments were made on the resulted thermodynamic values of xylenes and ethylto
luenes within the same phase (smectic) and on those of ethyltoluenes in bot
h phases (smectic and nematic).
