Abstract
Two straight-chain fatty alcohols (n-hexadecanol and n-octadecanol) were fo und in the neutral lipid fraction extracted from Pyrococcus furiosus cells. They were identified by thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography, mass and infrared spectra, and chemical modification. The fatty alcohols accounted for 54% of the neutral lipid of the cell.
