Abstract
It is well known that membership functions have a great influence on t he control performance of fuzzy logic controllers. In this paper, an a utomatic synthesis of membership functions based on genetic algorithms is proposed to control non-linear and time-varying turning processes with constant cutting forces. It is shown that optimal membership func tions for the control of turning processes can be obtained through the genetic approach. The effectiveness of this study on the control of t urning operations is shown by computer simulation and experimental ver ification. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
