Biaxial composite materials can be synthesized through the homogenization o
f constituent mediums with material properties less complex than biaxial, p
rovided the constituents collectively present two distinguished axes. We in
vestigate homogenization in the context of dissipative anisotropic dielectr
ic and dissipative anisotropic dielectric-magnetic materials. We consider t
he relationship between biaxiality and the geometry, orientation and compos
ition of the component mediums, and explore symmetries in the constitutive
dyadics of the biaxial materials and their relevance to the homogenized com
posite: medium. A generalized anisotropic biaxial structure, for which prin
cipal axes of real and imaginary parts of the permittivity and permeability
constitutive dyadics do not coincide, is discussed.
