The complexation of bifonazole, an antimycotic hydrophobic imidazole deriva
tive, with beta -cyclodextrin (beta -CD) was investigated in solid phase, u
sing the following complementary techniques: differential scanning calorime
try (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and X-ray powder diffractometry.
The beta -CD-bifonazole samples were prepared in both aqueous medium by co
precipitation and in solid state by kneading method and the beta -CD-bifona
zole binary diagrams were drawn. The experimental results demonstrate the f
ormation of two binary compounds, beta -CD-bifonazole and (beta -CD)(x)bifo
nazole (x=2 or 4). The first compound may be an inclusion compound and the
second a crystallized compound, in which the bifonazole is not necessarily
included in the cyclodextrin internal cavity.
