The soft-rotator model was applied to understand the collective nuclear str
ucture, electromagnetic transition, and the nucleon (both neutron and proto
n) interaction data of Ni-58 in a consistent manner. It was found that the
model could describe the collective level structure of Ni-58, which does no
t,exhibit the typical rotational or harmonic vibrational structure, up to e
xcitation energy of 4.5 MeV modestly. The nucleon interaction data were des
cribed up to 150 MeV reasonably well by the coupled-channels method with a
coupling scheme constructed consistent to the nuclear structure of Ni-58.
