Classical novae are potential sources of gamma rays, like the 1.275 MeV gam
ma emission following Na-22 beta decay, that could be detected by appropria
te instruments on board of future satellites like INTEGRAL. It has been sho
wn that the production of Na-22 by novae is affected by the uncertainty on
the Na-21(p, gamma)Mg-22 rate and in particular by the unknown partial widt
hs of the E-x = 5.714, J(pi) = 2(+), Mg-22 level. To reduce these uncertain
ties, we performed shell model calculations with the OXBASH code, compared
the results with available spectroscopic data, and calculated the missing p
artial widths. Finally, we discuss the influence of these results on the Na
-21(p,gamma)Mg-22 reaction rate and Na-22 synthesis.
