The effect of weather and aging on the properties of polymer coatings was s
tudied using solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Colorbond polymer coatings were
aged in an accelerated weathering tester and C-13 NMR spectra were obtained
. NMR relaxation times (C-13 T-1, H-1 T-1, T-1p) and line width were measur
ed to study the changes in dynamics and structure of the polymer coating du
e to the effect of UV light and weathering. No changes in chemical shift we
re observed between fresh and aged polymer coating. A difference in C-13 T-
1 and a small change in cross-polarization time between fresh and aged samp
les were observed. These changes in molecular mobility may be useful in und
erstanding the physical effects of aging and correlating changes in NMR rel
axation times to weathering of polymer coatings. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science
