F. Reichwein et al., Slipped capital femoral epiphysis: intraarticular position of devices. - Bad results and clinical consequences, UNFALLCHIRU, 103(10), 2000, pp. 820-825
Which consequences can be ascribed to the intraarticular position of device
s in the operative treatment of a slipped capital femoral epiphysis? Which
steps are to define as a standard of a careful procedure?
The clinical and radiological results of five cases of a pin or nail penetr
ation after the operative treatment of a slipped capital femoral epiphysis
are described, a possible connection of causalities is investigated. The in
traarticular position of devices in most cases goes along with an unfortuna
te clinical outcome and leads to a higher risk of developing chondrolysis.
Because of the radiologic overprojection with the femoral head it is possib
le to oversee the malposition of the pin. Any operative treatment of a slip
ped capital femoral epiphysis requires a careful intraoperative X-ray exami
nation combined with documentation. With this procedure the bad results of
an intraarticular implant position must be ascribed to the reminding risk o
f a fateful development.
