Vanadium(V) forms a 1:2 yellow complex with 2-(2-furyl)-3-hydroxy-4 N-
chromen-4-one in aqueous medium at 0.08-0.12 M CH3COOH. The complex is
extracted into chloroform and absorbs maximally at 410 nm. The absorb
ance remains constant for more than 18 h with molar absorptivity of 2.
24 x 10(4) 1 mol(-1) cm(-1). Beer's law is obeyed over the concentrati
on range 0-4 mu g V ml(-1). Sn(II), Mo(VI), ascorbic acid, oxalate and
disodium EDTA interfere seriously. The method has been applied for th
e estimation of V(V) in high speed steel and reverberatory flue dust.
