The formation of vivianite during the growth of Shewanella putrefaciens was
determined in a culture medium containing soluble iron Ill citrate (90 mM)
as electron acceptor, lactate (25 mM) as electron donor and 9 mM phosphate
. The phenomenon started slowly in contrast to abiotic assays where precipi
tation occurred immediately. The presence of biomass delayed the formation
of vivianite and probably the availability of iron II.
