New synthetic approach to polyaryl strands containing pyridine and pyrimidine units

The synthesis of hexaaromatic strand 4 in which pyridyl and pyrimidyl units are linked both directly and by a one-atom spacer is reported. The C-linka ge is introduced by double nucleophilic substitution reaction of a carbanio n at the bromopyridyl moiety of building block 2a.
