Abstract
The methods for the preparation of alpha -keto-beta -lactams described in t he literature are generally specific for a particular target molecule and l ack generality. A short route to several of these compounds has been develo ped and is described in this communication. The protocol based on an effici ent cyclization procedure followed by hydrolysis and oxidation allows prepa ration of alpha -keto-beta -lactams 5a-g with sensitive substituents.
