Abstract
The functional activity of DNA sequences from the 5' region of the chicken alpha -globin gene domain was studied. Silencers and transcription terminat ors were found in a fragment located 11-14.5 kb upstream of the pi gene. A fragment located 3-4.5 kb upstream of pi was shown to contain a CpG cluster , a part of which proved to be selectively methylated in nonerythroid cells . Cloned upstream of the alphaD gene promoter, this frap ment suppressed th e promoter activity when all its CpG were methylated.
