Modern data on the molecular mechanisms of antirestriction are reviewed. Th
e systems of inhibition are described for the restriction-modification enzy
mes of type I in phages and in conjugative plasmids. The phenomenon of alle
viation of DNA restriction and its mechanism is presented for bacterium Esc
herichia coil. The principle of protein mimicry of nucleic acids is discuss
ed as a novel way to control biological processes in the cell with referenc
e to antirestriction proteins Ard.
