This paper presents a system for the automatic selection of chucking surfac
es in turning rotational parts. The general strategy of the system aims to
define all the possible set-ups that allow complete machining of the part.
Several criteria have been provided to eliminate those set-ups or set-up co
mbinations incompatible with the process constraints. In particular, the de
veloped system takes into account the geometrical shape of both the part an
d the chuck as well as the dimensions and the tolerances provided by the de
sign. All the related information is saved in standard databases.
