Abstract
A Hamiltonian description of vacuum magnetic fields in toroidal geomet ry is presented. Using a magnetic scalar potential in conjunction with Boozer's canonical representation of a magnetic field [A. Boozer, Phy s. Fluids 26, 1288 (1983)], a field-line Hamiltonian for general nonax isymmetric vacuum fields has been derived. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
