Abstract
This paper is in two parts. In the first is outlined the nature and philoso phy underlying activity within the University of the First Age Extended Lea rning Centres. In the second, the author reflects upon the impact of this i nitiative both on her own role as a teacher, on colleagues across the city and upon schools at an institutional level. She draws on her experience as a teacher and UFA Paul Hamlyn Fellow within her school, and also from her r ole as UFA Extended Learning Centre Development Officer working with school s and community groups across Birmingham.
