Abstract
By combining a gain-clamped semiconductor optical amplifier (GC-SOA) and a saturable absorber-semiconductor optical amplifier module, 10Gbit/s RZ tran smission over 5000km (200 x 25km) has been demonstrated in a fibre loop set up. It is shown that a GC-SOA could compensate for the patterning introduce d by a conventional SOA.
