Abstract
Beta-blockers are the treatment of choice to prevent the first episode of v ariceal bleeding and further rebleeding episodes. In acute bleeding all pat ients should receive pharmacological treatment with vasoconstrictors and en doscopic treatment. Failure of therapy should lead to consideration of tran sjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting.
