The octaheterobicyclo[2.2.2]octanes MeSi(SiMe2SiMe2)(3)E(E=P, As) have
been prepared in high yields (up to 50%) from the alkali metal phosph
ide or arsenide Na3E/K3E and the heptasilane MeSi(SiMe2SiMe2Cl)(3) [GR
APHICS] The cages were isolated by crystallization from heptane and th
e crystal structure of the arsenic compound was determined. The synthe
sis of the heptasilane MeSi(SiMe2SiMe2Cl)(3) is described too. All com
pounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy (H-1, Si-29
, C-13, P-31) as well as elemental analysis.
