In the presence of strong acids, l-hydroxyalkyl-tris(trimethylsilyl)si
lanes (la-c) undergo a rearrangement under formation of bis(trimethyls
ilyl)-1-trimethylsilylalkylsilanols (4a-c). The conversion is interpre
ted as proceeding through a silylium ion intermediate, which can be tr
apped with methanol or hydrofluoric acid to give the methoxysilane 5 o
r the fluorosilane 6 respectively.
