Abstract
We develop a two-dimensional theory of nonlinear, anistropic plates using t he variational approach of Ciarlet. Under very general conditions on the el astic coefficient for the linear case, it is shown that there is a unique s olution to the associated variational problem. Moreover, refined theories a re constructed for these systems. With regard to nonlinear elastic plates, we consider Filon's nonlinear, anisotropic model. Dynamical, nonlinear mode ls are also considered. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
