The team physician is faced with an array of imaging studies to evalua
te the injured athlete, including CT scans, conventional and cross-sec
tional arthrography, bone scanning, sonography, and MR imaging. An und
erstanding of the clinical usefulness of these examinations requires s
ome knowledge of the physical principles on which they are based. This
article presents the fundamental physical principles and summarizes t
he indications for these tests to the evaluation of common athletic in
jures.
