Composting: An option for municipal solid waste management in Havana City

Little work has been done to develop an integrated solid waste management p olicy in Cuba. However, the composition of municipal solid waste in Havana City lends itself to composting of the sizeable organic fraction. In this s tudy, a linear programming approach was used to evaluate the economic feasi bility of an integrated solid waste management system consisting of inciner ation, composting and landfilling; for Havana. The model and optimisation r esults showed that a combined composting/landfilling system would be optima l for Havana given current capital and operating cost data for Cuba.
