Abstract
A MAJOR PROBLEM IN ARCHAEOLOGY IS TO relate assemblages of material culture to specific groups' on the ground'. A present tendency is to describe them by the term 'ethnic group'. This paper examines this usage critically and argues for its rejection on grounds of analytical vagueness.
