Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to study the growth of Ag on cl ean and N-modified Cu(lll) surfaces. N forms elongated rectangular islands on Cu(111) surfaces. These islands can cordon on areas of the dean surface. Deposited AE is found to grow in a layer-by-layer fashion in these confine d areas. Using this method, we have created three-dimensional Ag islands wi th thicknesses for which one could expect quantum well behavior to occur. ( C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
