T. Imayoshi et al., DEVELOPMENT OF A 1-KWH-CLASS MODULE-TYPE SMES-DESIGN STUDY, IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity, 7(2), 1997, pp. 844-848
We are planning to build a 1kWh/1MW(Maximum stored energy/Maximum powe
r capability) module-type SMES (named ESK; Experimental SMES of Kyushu
Electric Power) as a first step to aiming at the realization of pract
ical SMESs for power line control. Main points of the design are those
of module-type coils (each 3 coils and a converter as one unit of 2 m
odules) for the development to scale up a capacity of SMES, the choice
of low loss stranded cables for reducing of pulse operating loss, the
choices of modified D shape coils reduced of stresses in the conducto
r which become more serious in the scaling up, and high Tc superconduc
tor (HTS) current leads for covering a weak point on thermal loss in a
module-type SMES which needs many current leads. Some other points ar
e also studied such as; design of cooling system in which a quench of
coil does not induce that of other, and harmonics suppression in the c
onverter system.
